A rendering of the upcoming modern look for the Boston area center built in 1949.Chestnut Hill, Mass.  — WS Development has begun demolition on a 120,000-square-foot former Macy's at the Boston-area Chestnut Hill Shopping Center, which is the region's oldest suburban center. The demolition is the start of the second phase of redevelopments that are bringing a new streetscape, outdoor dining cafes and new buildings with glass facades overlooking Hammond Pond.

A new 115,000-square-foot building that will include a 31,000-square-foot Sports Club/LA health and fitness complex and a 40,000 square foot movie theater led by National Amusements Inc. will be built where Macy's once stood.

Later this year, construction will begin on the third phase and include a new 64,000-square-foot, three-story building with a mix of stores, restaurants and WS Development's new corporate headquarters.

Chestnut Hill opened in 1949 and was originally anchored by R.H. Stearns, S.S. Pierce and Star Market.
